Sore After a Chiropractic Adjustment? Home Care in Surprise, AZ
This page is for patients of Legg Chiropractic and Acupuncture who have just finished a visit with Dr. Derek M. Legg, D.C., M.P.H. It explains what is normal in the first few days, how to use ice and heat at home, when to call the office, and how to keep your care moving between visits. These are general guidelines. The specific advice Dr. Legg gave you at your visit comes first, and when in doubt, call (623) 214-7600.
Is it normal to be sore after a chiropractic adjustment?
Mild soreness, stiffness, achiness or tiredness in the areas we treated is normal for up to three days after a chiropractic adjustment, acupuncture or dry needling. Many patients describe it the way they would describe a good workout. Drink water, keep moving gently, and give the treated tissue a little time to settle. Most people feel their adjustments as comfortable and relaxing, and tenderness the next day is common rather than a sign that something went wrong.
How long does soreness last after an adjustment?
For most people it settles within three days, and it usually fades a little each day. Soreness that lasts longer than three days, or that gets worse instead of better, is a reason to call the office at (623) 214-7600.
Ice and heat, the simple routine
Ice is best for new or sharp pain and swelling. Use an ice pack for twenty minutes at a time with a thin cloth between the pack and your skin. Heat is best for muscle tightness and stiffness. Use a heating pad for twenty minutes at a time, again with a thin cloth between the pad and your skin. The simplest routine is to alternate ice and heat, cycling between them at least two times, and to do it before bed so you rest easier. Never place ice or heat directly on bare skin, and do not fall asleep on a heating pad.
What should I avoid after a chiropractic adjustment?
Give the treated areas a little room for up to 48 hours. Skip heavy lifting and hard workouts, and let gentle walking and normal movement be enough. Do not push a stretch into sharp pain, because soreness that eases as you move is different from pain that bites. Try not to sit still for hours at a stretch, since stiffness sets in faster than most people expect. Hold off on deep tissue work or another provider adjusting you during that window, so we can tell what your body is responding to. And as with ice and heat, nothing goes directly on bare skin and no one falls asleep on a heating pad.
If you are not sure whether something is safe for you, call the office at (623) 214-7600. The advice Dr. Legg gave you at your visit comes first.
When to call the office
Please call the clinic if soreness lasts longer than three days or gets worse instead of better, if pain is severe or quickly worsening, if you notice numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg, or if you have new or worsening headaches, dizziness or nausea. Any symptom that worries you is a good enough reason to call. For chest pain, trouble breathing, loss of bladder or bowel control, or any medical emergency, call 911 right away. Patients with back pain, neck pain or headaches can read more about what to expect from care on those pages.
Why your next visit matters
The visit you just finished is the beginning. Lasting relief comes from finishing the treatment plan Dr. Legg builds with you, because consistent visits build on each other and starting and stopping lets progress slip away. Think of braces on teeth: they do not work in a single day, and steady, gentle pressure over many visits is what creates real change. Booking your next visits before you walk out is the best thing you can do for your recovery, and you can book online any time. Our schedule runs Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Arizona time, and the best times fill first.
Questions between visits
The question box above sends a note to Dr. Legg and the front desk. Please leave out health details; that box is not a secure channel. For anything urgent, call (623) 214-7600 and speak with the office. Answers to the questions patients ask most, from cost and insurance to safety and what to wear, are on the chiropractic FAQ page. If someone you know is hurting, you can refer a friend in about ten seconds, and their $49 first visit includes the exam, X-rays if needed, and a first adjustment. The $49 first visit is for new self pay patients and does not apply to Medicare, auto accident or personal injury cases, or workers' compensation.
How many visits will I need?
Every body and every injury is different. Dr. Legg builds a treatment plan around your exam and your goals, and reviews it with you so you always know the next step.
Will my next visit hurt?
Most people find their adjustments comfortable and relaxing. Mild soreness afterward can be normal, and it usually eases within a day. Tell us about any tender areas so we can adjust our approach.
What if I need to reschedule?
Life happens. Call the clinic as early as you can and we will find another time that keeps your plan on track.
Is my card on file secure?
Yes. Your card is stored securely and is only used for the visits and services you approve. It simply lets you skip the checkout line.
What will my care cost?
We will walk you through your treatment plan and any costs directly, so there are no surprises. Please ask the front desk any time.
