Chiropractor vs. Physical Therapist for Sciatica: Which Is Right for You?

When that sharp, shooting pain runs from your lower back down through your buttock and into your leg, you know something is wrong. Sciatica is common, and one of the first questions patients ask is whether they should see a chiropractor or a physical therapist.

It is a fair question. Both are licensed providers who treat sciatica regularly. Their approaches are different, and understanding those differences can help you choose where to start.

What Is Actually Causing Your Sciatica

Sciatica is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom. Something is pressing on or irritating your sciatic nerve, and the real question is what. Common causes include herniated or bulging discs in the lumbar spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), piriformis syndrome (a muscle in your buttock irritating the nerve), and joint restriction in the lower back.

The cause matters because it shapes which treatment plan makes sense.

The Chiropractic Approach

Chiropractors focus on how the spine and pelvis are moving. Chiropractic adjustments restore motion to restricted joints in the lower back and pelvis. When a disc is part of the problem, spinal decompression may be added to the treatment plan.

At our office in Surprise, AZ, Dr. Legg can add acupuncture and dry needling to a sciatica treatment plan. Acupuncture may help calm pain, and dry needling can release the piriformis and other muscles that may be irritating the nerve. Results vary from person to person.

The Physical Therapy Approach

Physical therapists focus primarily on strengthening and stretching. They use exercises to improve flexibility, build core stability, and correct movement patterns that may be contributing to nerve irritation. That work is valuable for building long-term resilience.

Exercise does not address a joint that is not moving well, and an adjustment does not build strength on its own. That is why many patients do best with a plan that includes both.

So Which Should You Choose?

In many cases, the answer is both. At Legg Chiropractic and Acupuncture, a treatment plan can combine chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture and dry needling, and therapeutic exercises to strengthen and stabilize. If you need a physical therapist or a medical referral, Dr. Legg will tell you.

If your sciatica started suddenly after an injury, is severe, or includes numbness or weakness in your leg or foot, get a thorough exam first. If you notice changes in bladder or bowel control, go to urgent care or the emergency room right away.

Sciatica does not always resolve on its own, and the longer it lingers, the harder it can be to live with. At Legg Chiropractic and Acupuncture, we offer same-day appointments and a thorough exam to find what is driving your pain.

New self pay patients can start with a $49 first visit that includes the consultation, a full chiropractic exam, digital X-rays if clinically necessary, a first adjustment, and a first acupuncture and dry needling treatment. The $49 visit does not apply to Medicare, auto accident or personal injury cases, or workers' compensation.
